Nature vs. Nurture

This catchy term, “nature vs. nurture” is a way to interpret how much of our genetics were part of us since the day we were born and what other part was learned in our lives. This term was first used by Francis Galton in 1874. He said it in his work English Men of Science: Their Nature and Nurture. Some topics that are part of this debate are homosexuality and obesity. Some scientists say that both of these are hereditary but others say that the environment takes a huge role on it. Other topics come to mind like murderers. Also twins come into the debate. People study how twins develop when they are together and when they are separated. Many people go to the nature side of the debate but others prefer the nurture. In this case, there is no side that has any advantage since we gather from both to live our life. But as the scientists study more, they realize that either nature or nurture cannot make a good life out of someone of us. I believe that nature and nurture are needed to get a balanced life. With nature all alone, we could not develop our skills at the fullest. With nurture we could not have a start point.

The Life of Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist. He was born in February 12, 1809. He was born in Shrewsbury and was born into a wealthy family. He studied in the Shrewsbury School. He then in 1825 went to the University of Edinburg Medical School with his brother. After graduation, he went to Tenerife to study natural history. He then met Captain Robert FitzRoy. He then was convinced to go on a voyage in the HMS Beagle with captain FitzRoy. The trip started the 27th of December of 1831 and lasted about five years. Darwin saw volcanic rocks and beautiful rainforests. He experienced with natives from Argentina and then experienced earthquakes. The theory came about when Darwin saw how the animals changed from region to region. This was because of the environment they were living in. The theory of natural selection states that in the wild, only the strongest will survive. He said that animals evolved to be able to survive in the environment. This theory was highly controversial because Darwin was opposing God, who was a huge figure in that time. People thought that God made all things the way he wanted and Darwin said that they evolved on their own. This created a lot of controversy. He contradicted the religion. He was worried over developing his theory because his wife was very religious and the publishing of this book would tear the marriage apart. He did not want his kids to live through a divorce. He also was criticized heavily for this book.

Why is Psychology Important

Psychology is the science of mental processes and behavior according to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. Psychology is important because of many reasons. We should study psychology since it teaches us how do we behave usually and why do we do that. Psychology also helps us understand others in a way we could not do before. We learn about the human mind and human actions, or in some cases, our actions.
